Charlie Macpherson is an Internationally acclaimed glass artist. He creates beautiful pieces of hand-blown contemporary glass for both outdoor spaces and interiors by balancing the beautiful simplicity of his forms with more complex use of texture, line and pattern. Charlie takes inspiration from his surrounding environment. His glass artwork has been in private and public collections in America, Australia, Europe, Canada, and Hong Kong.
Each unique piece is signed by Charlie, giving a reference for Collectors and adding to the provenance.
The Prince of Wales visited Charlie's Poundbury studio in May 2016; he has a keen interest in promoting handmade skills and advocates for Artisan crafts.
The process and skills that Charlie Macpherson uses in creating his glass art are astonishing as they start to take shape in the hot glass studio. Molten glass is manipulated into the desired form using traditional blown glass techniques. Layers of glass are built up, ensuring the cane details are trapped between each layer; these are then exposed during the meticulous polishing processes.
Post the hot processes; the pieces are taken through various 'cold' methods - cutting, grinding, polishing, carving and creating textures to reveal intricate details, adding optical reflections and refractions to the thick polished surfaces.
Charlie will always develop his ideas on paper first, then developing them further into three-dimensional forms in his studio. It doesn't stop there, as the works are further evaluated and developed on paper once again. This harmonious development between that first idea and material is integral to working on the finer details of a design.
The Guardian Newspaper published a series "Artisans" which Charlie Macpherson featured in, really worth a read, and the link is HERE.
